- Dog Friendly: Yes
- Dogs off Leash: Dogs are generally required to be on leash in the High Peaks region
Hurricane Mountain was one of my favorite ADK hikes. It has a beautiful 360 view and a fire tower, without the typical crowds in the nearby High Peaks.
While it may be overlooked for its taller neighbors, Hurricane Mountain is a worthwhile hike for anyone looking to spend some time in the Adirondacks.
Chloe and I hiked the Southern Approach trail back in March of 2019, and I still dream about the views from the top. The Southern Approach trail starts along Route 9N, from a parking area along the road. There’s enough room for a few cars, but when I went, there were only a couple other people on the trail.
From there you start climbing pretty quickly, but soon evens out to cross over beaver swamps, before going up again. I loved going through the beaver swamps. Varied terrain always makes it seem like a hike is a little shorter than it actually is.
The summit is totally exposed, giving you a chance to spot the fire tower before you actually reach the top. And when you finally reach the top, the view is worth the miles.
I can’t speak to the other approaches, but I’ve hiked Big and Little Crow which are part of a loop the extends into the Northern Approach if you’re looking to do a longer hike.
Overall, a great alternative to the High Peaks if you’re looking for a view without all of the elevation gain of a 4,000 footer.
