Our Top Tips:
- A beautiful mountain with so many options for trails.
- Busy during the summer and on weekends, so get there early.
- Don’t forget the $4 fee if you’re parking on the Underhill side.
Hike Basics:
Length: Varies based on trail – The loop I’ve done twice is 6.1 miles (Halfway House Trail up, Long Trail to the summit and Sunset Ridge trail down)
Elevation Gain: 2,690ft. (also varies based on trail)
Dog Friendly? Yes
Off-Leash friendly? I’ve seen different answers for this, but generally, leash dogs along the CCC road and in the alpine zone. I didn’t have any problems with having her off leash along the trails up or down, but kept her leashed along the Long Trail because there are so many people.
Other tips: There are a couple gaps between rocks that have tripped Chloe up both times we hiked. There’s a rock that requires a 3-4 foot jump down that she refuses to do, so make sure if your dog is a little timid, you can lift them or at least bring treats to guide them to the path of least resistance.
Chloe and I have hiked Mansfield twice and it’s one of the most beautiful hikes in Vermont in my opinion.
It’s the tallest mountain in the state, and because of the road to the Nose, draws hikers of all skill levels. It’s a doable hike for many, which also means there are many, many people on the trail. Make sure you and your dog are comfortable hiking around a big crowd and other dogs.
One of my favorite parts of doing this mountain as a loop is that you get to see some beautiful forest as well as a lot of ridge line (bring your sunscreen). The Halfway House trail doesn’t have any views until you step out of the woods a few hundred feet from the Long Trail and a sprawling view of the state. The exposed summit is also the perfect spot for lunch.
It’s easy to see why this is such a popular hike, and it’s definitely worth braving the crowds. Don’t forget to stop in Burlington or Stowe for some great food and beer after you reach the bottom again.
