This has been a mild winter by New England standards, but the cabin fever is still setting in. There isn’t even any snow to break up the cold days. But all this time spent in my apartment has lead to some exciting changes over the past couple weeks.
When my roommates and I moved in last fall, we were all strangers and all way too nice. We let the former tenants leave their couch and some creative DIY pieces of furniture. Five months later, I’m happy to say we’ve finally gotten the last of their stuff out. New couch, new entertainment center. It’s really changed the whole feel of the apartment, and I feel so much more at home.
I also brought back a new small kitchen appliance after the winter break, my parent’s 25 year old bread maker. I’ve decided I’m now a stay-at-home (dog) mom, and need to be saving money on groceries by making my own bread. I’m not good at it yet, but honestly, with every edible loaf, I’m so proud of my accomplishment.
While I wait for that bread to rise, I’ve started the yearly obsession that is planning my garden. This year is new and fun because new location, but it also means I don’t have access to my parent’s raised bed this summer. There are already plans in the works to fix up our truly gross backyard, and strategically place some containers on the front balcony.
Winter always feels like a planning season for me. Once the New Years goals become habits or drop out of my life, I look toward spring and the new life it will bring. Just thinking about it makes me excited for the future.
