Franconia Falls November 2020

When I planned this road trip, I thought it would be a good idea to give myself a day to pack and put everything together before hitting the road. But when I woke up at 4:30am on Saturday, I didn’t see a reason to wait any longer. So I packed the rest of my things and waited patiently for Lowes and Trader Joe’s to open to grab the rest of my supplies.

By 1pm I was ready to hit the road. I didn’t have any accommodations planned, but I read about a first come, first service campground in the White Mountain National Forest and thought, perfect, no one will be around in November.

Chloe loved plan B

I was wrong. It was sunny and in the 70s, unheard of for November in New Hampshire, and I didn’t consider most people would get to the campground on Friday.

We didn’t want to waste the day, so I drove down the Kancamungus Highway to a lookout point, and decided to go for a little hike. We pulled into one of the trailheads that looked pretty big and popular, which usually means more accessible hikes.

I was right. Sort of. We ended up hiking 3 flat miles to Franconia Falls (and 3 more miles back) along a river. It was beautiful and not super busy because we got there so late in the afternoon.

The hike was a beautiful and easy trek.

I made another pass through the campground on the way back, hoping someone had left in the past couple hours, but no luck.

So I drove the hour back home, and into the most beautiful sunset I’ve seen in a while. I grabbed some pizza and had one last good sleep in my own bed before really setting off on my trip.
